Lee… I’m not queer
Story
In 1950s Mexico City, an American expat in his late forties lives a lonely life amidst a small American community. However, the arrival of a young student forces the man to finally form a meaningful relationship with someone. Ultimately, it was Daniel Craig who convinced Luca Guadagnino to cast Drew Starkey after watching an audition tape with Guadagnino and telling him "That's the guy" after seeing Starkey. [telepathically] Eugene Allerton: I’m not queer.
William Lee: I know
Eugene Allerton: I’m disembodied.. Features Orpheus (1950). Queer seeks to explore the complex relationship between men. Society tends to group men into categories while constantly failing to figure them out.
The film starts out fairly predictable
This film highlights some of the realities of the male species. In a nutshell, men are a lot more complicated than they give themselves credit for. This is a far cry from what we know of director Luca’s work. Don’t expect another “Call Me by Your Name” or anything close to it.
They still aren’t easy to read
This is different, and it takes you to a different time and place where men weren’t so easy to read. The only difference today is that we tend to apply our own perceptions and concerns to people we don’t really know anything about. And that’s what this film is about in a nutshell. Saying more about the film would only give away its secrets.
For that alone, I think the film achieved its goal
This is a film you’ll hopefully want to explore on your own without having read much about it. It’s slow-paced, yet very nuanced and beautiful to watch as it becomes more and more engaging. I would have liked to have seen more coverage of the young guy, but the intent behind his sometimes vague narrative is compelling. The film truly beautifully and visually explores the way most of us truly want to get a glimpse into the true self of the person we entrust our hearts to.
