Story
Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, impulsively meets and marries the son of an oligarch. Once the news reaches Russia, her fairy tale is threatened when her parents fly to New York to have the marriage annulled. Mikey Madison reflects on the roles that shaped his path to Anora, from “Better Things” to Once Upon a Time… At the Cannes Film Festival press conference, Mikey Madison said that director Sean Baker would act out different sex positions with his wife, producer Samantha Quan, to show the actors what he wanted them to do.

In a scene in Vegas, a character refers to “McCarran Airport.” While Las Vegas International Airport was known as McCarran International Airport for many decades, its name was changed to Harry Reid International Airport in late 2021. Igor: PLEASE! STOP! SCREAMING!
The set-up is tantalizing
Mikey Madison plays the title role, a New York striptease dancer. Then the story hooks us. She marries imprudently (the immature young son of a Russian oligarch) and finds herself in a terrible situation. Madison is remarkable in her performance, but all the others are good.
The conclusion is not disappointing
The overabundance of nudity and sex is old-fashioned for a mainstream film, but that and the intense – increasingly comic – drama have a rare vitality. The striking locations – Las Vegas and Coney Island in the off-season – are also skillfully captured. At over two hours, it’s too long, but it barely holds our attention because we can’t imagine how it’s going to end. The London Film Festival screenings sold out and I’m not surprised.
