A mysterious device designed to grant its owner eternal life reappears after four hundred years, leaving destruction in its wake. In an interview included with the Criterion release of this film, Ron Perlman talks about how Angel was supposed to speak Spanish. fluently. Ron Perlman tried, but Guillermo del Toro found the reading completely unusable. So the character was changed to an expatriate American who hates being in Mexico so much that what little Spanish he does speak is deliberately spoken badly. . Behind him, reflected in the glass of the door, are the crew and equipment… [discussing why Deiter wants Cronos] Jesus Gris: He thinks it’ll help him live longer. Angel de la Guardia: [laughs] That bastard does nothing but pee all day and he wants to live longer? Explicit nudity was added in the US video release. Cronos, which is severely underrated on this site, is a gripping story that captivates the viewer throughout its duration. Guillermo Del Toro’s first film is a thoughtful, heartbreaking story that manages to be above all fresh, gripping, and unique, while also managing to capture the feel of horror movies in the same mold as The Shining, being a family film first and a horror film second. Cronos is certainly not associated with the slasher ending of the horror market, and it doesn’t even come close to the dirty attack on meaning that the choreography offers. What Cronos manages to achieve is an assault on the mind and soul, which is the essence of what a horror film must achieve if it is to leave a lasting impression. With that in mind, I can kind of see where the average rating came from, it is not a gore fest, it does not scare for a second and it does not have any gratuitous scenes with measured eyes. with rusty axes, but as any true horror fan knows, they are only secondary attractions to excellent horror films like The Shining, like The Fog and Cronos, if not at the top, it is very close. indeed. There are three things that stand out in particular about this film that make it undoubtedly worth watching. The most subtle is the commentary on US-Mexico relations that Guillermo Del Toro sprinkles throughout his film. It offers an interesting picture of how he, and no doubt many Mexicans, perceive their encounters with the US, that they are always trying to be dominated and have to support themselves in order to succeed. This is most evident with the very notable Christian references and deliberate name-calling. Our hero, an antiquarian, is called Jesus due to simple reincarnation issues, but there are many expressions like “My God”, “My Lord” and other comments of this nature in the film, there is undoubtedly a subplot on the part of the directors that highlights the good that still emanates from our protagonist. Jesus’ granddaughter and wife are called Aurora and Mercedes, and by knowing the meaning of their names, which are “dawn or first light” and “mercy”; it gives the ending of the film a sense of completion. Last but not least, it is worth mentioning the performances of Federico Lupi and Tamara Shanath, who provide the necessary gravitas in the movement, if not in the voice, to convey the deep emotional connection between grandfather and granddaughter, which, when all else is removed, is the main driving force of this story and one that will keep you coming back for more.
