James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis share what elements of their characters they find most intriguing and complementary, discussing their different approaches to the craft
Story
The family is invited to spend the whole weekend in a lonely house in the countryside, but during the weekend they realize that the family that invited them has a dark side. The story is based on the experience of Christian Tafdrup, the director of the original Danish film “Speak No Evil” (2022), who befriended a Dutch couple while on vacation in Tuscany with his wife. Although the Dutch were somewhat shy in social contacts, both couples got along very well, and upon returning home, Tafdrup received an invitation from a Dutch family to the Netherlands. He thought about it for a while, but decided that it would be strange for him to live with people whom he did not really know; his story for the film arose when he gave free rein to his darkest fantasies about what could happen if he accepted the invitation (while claiming that the original Dutch couple never gave off bad vibes).

In this remake, the nationalities of the two families were changed to American and British. A slow start is never boring because it gently hints that something is deeply wrong, even if you can’t figure out what it is yet. Both you and the guests want to like these characters, even if they seem more and more repulsive, and you don’t dare to be rude. I was surprised by how much humor there is, but it doesn’t ease the tension that builds like fire.

On the contrary, it makes everything even more surprising and disturbing. Without realizing it, you are constantly sitting on the edge of your seat, waiting for the inevitable, but praying that it doesn’t happen. And then, when the action finally begins, the third act brings great results. McAvoy is incredibly good in this film and his range is what evokes many of the emotions you experience while watching it.
