When Brett Goldstein, Jason Segel and Bill Lawrence were asked how they got Harrison Ford to appear on the show, Segel said that Goldstein originally wanted "Harrison Ford guy," and was auditioning for people similar to Ford. Segel told Goldstein that they had to at least take it to Ford first, thinking that he would immediately reject it, but at least other people would hear that Harrison Ford had brought the project, generating interest from other notable actors.

Goldstein still doesn’t understand what he did to convince him, but he was elated nonetheless.. From the reviews I’m reading here, it seems like people either love this series or really dislike it, and it seems like that might depend on the reviewers’ reaction to Jason Segal.
The relationships are complex and emotional, and the very real human challenges are well drawn
I’ve enjoyed his movies and think he’s perfect for this role — and the addition of Harrison Ford takes the series to an even higher level. The writing is excellent, the story is fresh, and the characters are original without exaggerating into stereotypically too unusual.
It can be laugh-out-loud funny and bring tears to your eyes the next minute
I was really disappointed after the second episode when I realized I would have to wait more. Highly recommended!
